Brentford have confirmed the signing of John Egan from Gillingham.

The Bees have agreed a deal for the former Sunderland trainee, although the Gills will be entitled to compensation and negotiations are ongoing.

And the Republic of Ireland youth international has taken to Twitter to post a goodbye message to supporters.

He wrote: “I'd like to thank Gills fans for the support during my two years at Priestfield. I loved my time there and I hope you all enjoy a great season next year with a fantastic group of players who I wish well for next season too. All the best.”

Egan started his career with the Black Cats but failed to make a first team appearance for them.

He had loan spells at Crystal Palace and Sheffield United where he made solitary league appearances.

He had a longer spell at Bradford City before a stint at Southend United ahead of his permanent move to Kent.

Happy Boss: Dean Smith

Dean Smith said: “John is someone we believe can come in and challenge for a place in the team. I watched him a lot when he was at Sunderland and when he went out on loan.

“He is a proper centre back and has a hunger to keep the ball out of the net. He is a good defender and a good footballer as well. He is also a leader and we want to keep adding leaders to the squad.”

Egan will replace James Tarkowski in the squad after the former defender went on strike to force a through a move to Burnley.

Co-director of football Phil Giles added: "We are fortunate to have some high quality central defenders already at the club, but only one naturally right sided since the departure of James Tarkowski.

“John will therefore add some balance in this area. He has a good goal scoring record which we hope can continue at this higher level.

“On behalf of everyone at the club I'd like to welcome John for what I'm sure will be a successful time at Brentford."
