Brentford are close to agreeing a new contract with young full back Josh Clarke.

The 22-year-old is out of contract at the end of the month and made 12 appearances for the Bees last season.

Clarke also spent a loan spell at Barnet during Lee Carsley's time in charge and he scored three goals in 10 games but was also sent off.

Head coach Dean Smith said: “I believe it's close. When I left there were negotiations going on with the club and I didn't think we were too far away. I hope it can get sorted.”

At the front of Clarke's mind will be whether he will get regular football at Griffin Park next season.

Brentford and Hull players wait

He impressed Smith at the back end of the last campaign and produced an assured performance in the 2-0 defeat to eventually promoted Hull.

Clarke said after the defeat to the Tigers: “I’m focusing on getting the games out of the way and hopefully something happens.

“I want to get as many minutes as possible before the end of the season.

“I see the comments and I’m happy that I’m impressing the gaffer and the staff at Brentford.

“I can’t get too excited about that. I just have to focus and get the games out of the way.”
