Dean Smith admitted Akaki 'Andy' Gogia left the club because Brentford wouldn't give him guarantees over playing time.

The 25-year-old, who joined the Bees on a free transfer in 2015, spent last season on loan with 2. Bundesliga side Dynamo Dresden.

And Gogia was allowed to make the move permanent, although he then moved swiftly on to Union Berlin.

And Smith confirmed that it was a move that made sense for all parties.

He said: “Andy went away last year. He wasn't getting much game time here. He wanted to go out on loan and get game time and did well.

“The club were happy with him and he's happy to stay in Germany.”

The Georgian born midfielder moved to Griffin Park two years ago from FC Hallescher and was confirmed a day after the Bees' season came to an end in the Championship play-offs.

The former German youth international made just 14 appearances in his first season in west London and, when he was not guaranteed regular playing time at Brentford, returned to his homeland and joined Dynamo Dresden on a season long loan.

He made 24 appearances for Dresden, scoring 10 goals as the German side finished fifth in the second tier.
