Brentford head coach Dean Smith believes that Reece Cole and Tom Field have probably gone as far as they can playing B team games after the pair left on loan.

Cole, who impressed for the first team in pre-season, made the move to Newport County while Field, who made his debut against Fulham in April 2016, has made a temporary move to Bradford.

And the feeling was that both of them need senior football to continue their development with their path to the first team being blocked at the moment.

Smith said: “We feel that both of them need to continue their development. (B team boss) Kevin (O'Connor) won't mind me saying it but they've probably gone as far as they can with the B team and we need to push them further.

“Tom has been with us for a long time. Reece was with the B team and if Tom's not playing games, we didn't feel the B team games would be suffice to continue his development and a club of Bradford City's stature will do him really well.”

Another two who could depart Griffin Park are Emmanuel Onariase and Zain Westbrooke who have both impressed for the B team.

Smith added: “We've spoken about Manny who did well at Cheltenham last season. Ideally if he could go to a League Two or League One club and maybe Zain Westbrooke to go and get minutes there.

“They're standout performers in the B team who'd find it difficult to get into the first team squad.”

Tom Field

The B team is now in its second year of existence and Smith admitted it is difficult between deciding whether to keep the players at Griffin Park or let them leave, temporarily, to get senior football.

He explained: “It's difficult as we have some really good fixtures for the B team. It's a system that is working well for us.

“We know the players have to play regular competitive football and the time has come for them.”
