Bobby Zamora got AFC Wimbledon fans excited on Twitter this week by responding to questions over his future.

The former Tottenham, QPR and Fulham striker is a free agent following the expiry of his contract at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Neal Ardley is in the market for one more forward to add to the Dons ranks for next season to compete with Lyle Taylor, Tom Elliott and Dominic Poleon.

Boss Ardley likes to operate with four strikers on the books and the departure of Bayo Akinfenwa freed up a significant chunk of the budget this summer.

However, 35-year-old former England international Zamora would command wages far in excess of anything seen at the club before were he to enter into talks.

Whispers online have been linking the Dons with a move for the out-of-contract star for the past few weeks.

One AFC Wimbledon supporter decided to take matters into his own hands by reaching out to the Barking-born forward.

He asked Zamora which number he would wear if he joined the Kingsmeadow club instead of his favoured No. 25, currently registered to youngster Dan Gallagher.

Zamora replied to the tweet by insisting he only liked the No. 25, meaning if Ardley does want to sign the player then there will have to be a bit of tinkering next season.

Wimbledon’s location would appeal to Zamora’s London roots but it remains to be seen whether he would be prepared to drop down to League One level.

With scheduled games against Reading, Crystal Palace, Woking and Dagenham & Redbridge in this pre-season run, Ardley’s side still have plenty of time to incorporate new signings into the group.

The first game of their League One adventure is against Walsall as they begin to navigate a hectic start to the campaign.
