Atletico Madrid believe it will be “almost impossible” to bring Diego Costa back to the Vicente Calderon this summer.

The Chelsea striker is thought to be considering his options after being alerted to Atletico’s willingness to re-sign him.

Costa arrived at Stamford Bridge for a fee of £32million in July 2014 and has proven a big hit in west London.

He has scored an impressive 35 goals in 74 appearances but has also been involved in a number of controversies during his time in England.

The striker also came under fire from sections of the club’s support after a series of poor performances under Jose Mourinho earlier this season.

New Chelsea manager Antonio Conte , who this week signed a three-year contract to replace Guus Hiddink, is desperate to keep hold of the fiery Spaniard.

Conte is said to be keen to build a team around Costa and sees the likes of Alexandre Pato, Radamel Falcao and Loic Remy as more dispensable assets.

Costa would not be short of suitors should Chelsea change their minds and a big-money bid from the Chinese Super League has already reportedly been turned down.

Atletico president Enrique Cerezo would dearly love to see the frontman return to the Calderon, however he remains pessimistic about his chances of striking a deal.

“He has a contract with Chelsea,” he told Spanish radio station Onda Cero.

“There are many times when, as much as a I want a player, there is a contract.

“To negotiate with Chelsea can be really tough, almost impossible.”

Costa scored 43 goals in 93 league games for Atletico, winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey and two Super Cups as well as reaching a Champions League final.
