Neal Ardley has moved to fill the troublesome AFC Wimbledon left-back spot with the signing of Jack Smith following his release by Millwall.

The Dons boss has been on the lookout for a new full-back after the departures of Callum Kennedy and Jim Fenlon this summer.

It has been a painstaking recruitment process for Ardley and he has looked to a face from the past by bringing Smith to Kingsmeadow.

The defender, who is the brother of former QPR and Cardiff midfielder Tommy Smith, came through the ranks at Watford while Ardley was in the Vicarage Road first-team.

“It’s a signing that we’ve taken our time with and we’ve looked at different options to fit the qualities that we wanted,” Ardley told the club’s official website.

“We know Jack well from Watford days and he has played for a lot of his career at a higher level. He is deceptively quick and has got a really relaxed, calm way about him.

Single season: Callum Kennedy only lasted one year at Wimbledon

“Jack is a very good one-on-one defender and he’s also two-footed. He is one of those right footed left-backs who is very good at crossing with his left as well.”

Smith becomes Ardley’s ninth summer signing at Kingsmeadow, following on from the arrivals of James Shea and Joe McDonnell late last week.

He has made more than 250 Football League appearances at Swindon and most recently the Championship Lions, who he played for against the Dons in last year’s League Cup.

“I met with Neal Ardley last week and he sold the club to me by providing a vision of what he wants to do next season,” Smith added.

“I’m pleased to be a part of it. I’ve missed a week of pre-season training so it was a relief to sign and I can’t wait to play some games hopefully.”
