Ryan Sweeney is expected to undergo a medical at Stoke City today as he waves goodbye to AFC Wimbledon.

The 19-year-old centre-half has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs in the past year with Tottenham and West Ham previously mentioned as admirers.

However, it is Mark Hughes’ Potters who look to have won the race for the defender’s signature and Sweeney is set to join the Stoke development squad.

A fee of around £250,000 was agreed for the Republic of Ireland under-18 international yesterday lunchtime.

Sweeney played the full 90 minutes for Wimbledon in their friendly win over Woking on Saturday and it now appears as though that was his final appearance for the Dons.

Neal Ardley still has the likes of Paul Robinson, Darius Charles and Will Nightingale to choose from for two spots in the heart of the Wimbledon defence.

Nightingale partnerd Sweeney in that final outing at Woking's Kingfield and was deep in discussions with Ardley at full-time as they talked through his performance on the pitch in Surrey.

Sweeney leaves having made 13 appearances for the Dons, with 10 of those coming from February of this year onwards.
