Neal Ardley will decide whether to strengthen his squad in the January transfer window after AFC Wimbledon’s next two matches.

The Dons face Bristol Rovers and Exeter City in League Two before the window opens at midnight on January 2. The Dons drew 2-2 against Newport County on Saturday.

And Ardley has indicated he could be prepared to delve into the transfer market if the right players are available and affordable.

He said: “There’s two games until the January window. I need to see how the team shape up and whether we are missing anything at this level; there are lots of things that you weigh up before the time comes.

“If I can freshen things up and add something different that can give us a better squad during the second half of the season then I will try.”

Historically, January has not been the easiest month for AFC Wimbledon. Last season they lost top scorer Matt Tubbs to Portsmouth and impressive loanee Michael Smith to Swindon a year earlier.

January departure: Matt Tubbs

Ardley is keen to avoid a repeat of last year and is confident the club have the youth set up to cope with any such departures.

He said: “We lost both Tubbsy and Michael Smith half way through so I don’t want that to happen again so we try to bring in our own players.

“Sometimes the best ones aren’t the ones you can sign permanently.

“We’ve got some good young players coming through who are developing well and we have put together a very good squad.”

Ardley is in two minds over a January spend as he believes he has assembled one of the strongest squads in the division.

Despite notions that the table never lies, the Dons boss believes the club deserve to be higher position and will strengthen in areas that have cost them valuable points so far this season.

“Sometimes we have dominated games and there are a lot of good things about us; I think we are one of the better teams in the league but we haven’t translated that into consistently winning games.

“For me we should be in the top seven at the moment.

“We haven’t taken enough of our chances and we have conceded from silly set pieces so they are all things to take into consideration.

“If there are one or two convenient deals that can make a big difference and I’ve got the money then yes we might try and do something.”
