Brentford's FA Cup campaign was over almost as soon as it began as Walsall inflicted defeat onto Dean Smith's new side.

The Bees made five changes from the side beaten by Birmingham last weekend. James Tarkowski and Toumani Diagouraga were rested amid transfer speculation over the pair of them. Lasse Vibe, Maxime Colin were given the weekend off, while Alan Judge was on the bench.

Coming into the side were Jack O'Connell, Josh McEachran, Philipp Hofmann, Nico Yennaris and Alan McCormack.

Walsall and their supporters were clearly up for this contest against former boss Dean Smith, while Brentford were off the pace.

Harlee Dean had a chance from a header early on but the Saddlers took control and it was no surprise when they took the lead.

Sam Mantom was allowed too much time and space in midfield and he drifted through before curling his shot past David Button.

It was a lethargic performance in the first half and Brentford only found creative spark when Judge replaced McEachran.

Sergi Canos forced an excellent save from Neil Etheridge as the rain started to fall, while Button had to be alert to deny James O'Connor.

Leeds' win over Rotherham means Brentford's match with the Whites will be rearranged.
