Brentford, playing without a recognised striker, upset the form book and inflict defeat onto a Sheffield Wednesday side who had won their previous four.

With Lasse Vibe and Philipp Hofmann injured, Romaine Sawyers led the line for the Bees.

They caused the Owls problems in the opening stages and took the lead as John Egan's delightful looping header, from Ryan Woods' free kick gave them the lead.

And it was two before the break as Jota's corner was powered home by Harlee Dean who, minutes later, made a goal saving block from Jordan Rhodes.

Fernando Forestieri pulled one back in stoppage time but Brentford held on to register three precious points.

Below are six talking points from a wonderful night for the Bees.

Heroes one and all

Brentford's pre-match huddle

That was a wonderful Brentford performance! The 14 players that wore the red and white shirt at Hillsborough were fantastic.

While I will mention individual players' for their brilliance over the course of 90 minutes below, it should really be noted that it was the complete team performance.

The Bees showed the best of their two sides during the 90 minutes. Going forward in the first half, they were clinical and, when they had their backs against the wall in the second half, they stood tall.

It'd have been better for the hearts of the 200 or so Bees fans if it wasn't all one way traffic in the final 20 minutes where Sheffield Wednesday didn't just throw the kitchen sink at Brentford, they threw the whole of Hillsborough at them.

The Bees had to ride their luck at times but they got what they deserved, which was all three points.

No striker, no problem

Romaine Sawyers

Injuries to Philipp Hofmann and Lasse Vibe gave Dean Smith little choice but to go with a 'false nine' up front in the form of Romaine Sawyers, while young striker Justin Shaibu was named on the bench.

Sawyers caused problems early on with Sheffield Wednesday puzzled about how to deal with the attacking midfielder.

If the Bees were going to really threaten though then it would need a good delivery from set pieces and they got just that.

Ryan Woods' ball for John Egan's opener was superb but the looping header was even better with the Irishman doing everything right.

Jota's ball in to Harlee Dean was divine and the skipper powered the header home to make it 2-0. Victory wrapped up and the clinical nature of the Bees' defenders was better than the expensive Sheffield Wednesday strikers.

Henry debut

New Bee: Rico Henry

Rico Henry was handed his Brentford debut after proving his fitness to Dean Smith in his 60 minutes against QPR last week.

The former Walsall full back had been absent since joining the club after he required surgery on a dislocated shoulder.

And he made an excellent first impression going forward, giving the right side of Sheffield Wednesday all sorts of grief.

His defending was excellent too and it appeared as if he had been playing at this level for a long time and not actually his debut.

Wonderful wingers

Jota makes it 1-0

Jota and Sergi Canos have given Brentford a new dimension going forward. Given the personnel available to Dean Smith it was crucial that the Spanish pair played well.

And play well they did as the duo caused the home defence all sorts of issues going forward with their trickery.

Florian Jozefzoon replaced Canos just after the hour mark and he continued that theme, giving the Bees an outlet at a time when they were pegged back in their own half.

Defensive Brilliance

Harlee Dean celebrates his goal

Harlee Dean is fast becoming the John Terry of Brentford as not only does he put his body on the line for the club but he is now popping up with crucial goals.

The skipper has scored two in February and three for the season having gone 22 months without finding the net.

Perhaps more crucially he made a brilliant block to deny Sheffield Wednesday a certain goal through Jordan Rhodes just after going 2-0 up.

A heroic performance from the Brentford captain. It's a shame he'll miss the next two games after his 10th booking.

John Egan has been missed since his head injury against Chelsea and he returned with goalscoring aplomb.

His partnership with Harlee Dean seems the best option for Dean Smith at the moment with his extra pace giving him the edge over Andreas Bjelland.

It was a heroic defensive performance from Egan and the rest of the back four as they repelled practically everything Sheffield Wednesday threw at them with Dan Bentley making some brilliant saves.

The Bees stopper was another contender for man of the match as he resisted everything thrown at him until Fernando Forestieri's fine goal.

McEachran woe

Josh McEachran

Has Josh McEachran got a black cat? The former Chelsea man gets absolutely no luck. The midfielder has been in the form of his time at Brentford but suffered a cruel injury just before the break.

It was clear at the time that McEachran was in pain. Brentford will be keeping everything crossed in the hope that it's not as bad as it looked on the pitch.
