Manchester United 4-0 QPR

The stars shone brightly at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon as as Louis van Gaal's new-look Manchester United lived up to their Galacticos billing against QPR.

United have shelled out big transfer fees to try and address their slide down the Premier League and Rangers were their first victims of the new season in a 4-0 victory for the hosts.

There was a couple of changes to the QPR midfield as the R's were without injured duo Joey Barton and Jordon Mutch bu deadline-day signings Sandro and  Niko Kranjcar came straight into the side to deputise.

Most of the focus was on Manchester United's new faces though and Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind made their debuts at Old Trafford while Luke Shaw and superstar Colombian striker Radamel Falcao had to settle for a place on the bench.

It took United 24 minutes to open the scoring and it was another summer signing, Angel Di Maria, who broke the deadlock. The Argentina international whipped in a free-kick from the right and somehow the ball evaded everyone and arched into the far corner.

Di Maria was causing all sorts of problems and it was the former Real Madrid winger who was the driving force behind the home side's second goal.

Goalscorers: Ander Herrera and Angel Di Maria celebrate at Old Trafford

Ghosting past players on the far side, the wide-man found Wayne Rooney, whose shot was blocked, but Ander Herrera slotted home the loose ball.

The game was as good as over on the stroke of half time. A couple of simple passes between Mata and Herrera freed up space for Rooney and the United skipper calmly stroked the ball into the bottom corner to send his side three goals ahead at the break.

Clearly unimpressed with what he saw in the first half, R's manager Harry Redknapp hooked Clint Hill during the interval and replaced the defender with Armand Traore for the second  period in Manchester.

Concern: QPR's Sandro was forced off through injury

Rangers made a brighter start. Kranjcar, bursting late to the edge of the penalty area, had the visitors' clearest sight of goal so far moments after the restart but his shot was never going to trouble David De Gea.

At the other end, the Red Devils were threatening to make it four. Juan Mata wriggled past a couple of QPR players in a crowded penalty area and found Rooney, however the England hitman couldn't direct it past Rob Green and the chance went begging.

Not long after and van Gaal's side did extend their lead. Di Maria, who was a thorn in the side of the Hoops all afternoon, finally made an error. But he could do no wrong today as his wayward effort fell kindly for Mata and the little Spaniard swept it past a helpless Green.

Gaalacticos: The new United manager has splashed the cash

Eduardo Vargas was introduced to inject a little life into the Hoops attack, replacing Charlie Austin, but such was the United dominance, the on-loan Napoli forward was unlikely to get much of a sniff at goal in the closing stages.

Things went from bad to worse for Redknapp's boys though.

Falcao entered the fray to raptures applause for his Manchester United debut before Sandro's first outing in the Hoops shirt was ended prematurely on 74 minutes through injury as he was replaced by Carl Henry.

There was one last save for Green to make, denying Falcao a dream debut goal. Four it remained and QPR made the trip back down the M6 without a point.

QPR: Green, Caulker, Ferdinand, Hill (Traore, 45), Phillips, Austin (Vargas, 59), Fer, Isla, Kranjcar, Hoilett, Sandro (Henry, 74).

Subs (not used): McCarthy, Onuoha, Zamora, Taarabt.
