QPR needed penalties to see of Swindon in the EFL Cup first round with Matt Ingram the hero for Rangers.

Summer signing Yeni Ngbakoto marked his debut with a goal but Jordan Stewart struck with 15 minutes remaining to send the game to the extra 30 minutes.

And, three minutes into the first period of extra time, Conor Washington scored his first goal for the club after good work by Sebastian Polter and Tjaronn Chery's selflessness.

However, James Brophy struck after Matt Ingram could only parry Jordan Stewart's shot into the Swindon man's path to take the tie to penalties.

Anton Rodgers saw his penalty saved by the Rangers goalkeeper before the next were all scored until Bradley Barry was denied by Ingram. Nasser El Khayati scored to seal the win

Rangers made eight changes from the side that thrashed Leeds 3-0 on Sunday with only captain Nedum Onuoha, Karl Henry and Olamide Shodipo surviving.

Both sides probed early on with Rangers goalkeeper Matt Ingram having a running battle against Luke Norris. The Swindon striker saw every effort saved, or cleared off the line.

Swindon stopper Lawrence Vigouroux was called into action to deny Washington before Darnell Furlong struck the crossbar.

Rangers continued to press and took the lead when Washington's cross was turned in at the far post by Ngbakoto just before the hour mark.

But, with 18 minutes left on the clock, Jordan Stewart brilliantly controlled a ball over the top of the QPR back line and rifled his effort into the bottom corner.

Extra time was needed and three minutes in, Polter found time and space on the right hand flank. His cross found Chery who laid on Washington to restore Rangers' lead.

That lasted until the early stages of the second period as Stewart's curled effort was parried by Ingram but into the path of Brophy who equalised.
