Martin Allen was unhappy with the decision to abandon Barnet's game at Newport County at half-time due to a waterlogged pitch.

The Bees were leading 1-0 at the break thanks to John Akinde's 22nd second opener when referee Graham Salisbury felt that the pitch was unfit to carry on with the game.

And Allen felt that the officials should have given the pitch 10-15 minutes to see whether it improved rather than call the game at half-time.

He said: “I don't agree with it. There are three patches of water down the wing and I felt the referee owed it to the players and supporters, especially the Barnet supporters that travelled down here to give it 10 or 15 minutes in the second half.

“There were only three patches on the pitch that are wet. The rest is fine.”

Opposite number Warren Feeney felt the decision was the only one Salisbury could make given the conditions which only worsened as time wore on.

“I understand why the referee did it, but it's disappointing for everyone,” he said.

“We might have been losing 1-0, but we had the momentum. They might have dominated the first five minutes, but we were on top after that. I thought we had a great chance in the second half.”

Of the 45 minutes that took place, Barnet had the better of the opening exchanges with Akinde firing them into the lead after 22 seconds – the fastest goal of the season.

Jean Louis Akpa-Akpro then hit the crossbar as the Bees dominated the play but, inspired by QPR loanee Reece Grego-Cox, the Exiles started to come into the contest.

Allen added: “It was a great start for our team – we started very sharply and hit the bar and it could have been 2-0.

“They were bound to come back into the game at some point, having possession and a couple of half chances.

“They hit the bar themselves. Newport are a different team to what they were last season. We'll pack our stuff up, go back home and onto the next one.”
