Peterborough United 3–2 AFC Wimbledon

Tom Nichols came off the bench to break AFC Wimbledon's hearts with two second half strikes, including a last gasp winner, to knock them out of the EFL Cup tonight.

Former Posh player Chris Whelpdale had given the Dons the lead, but after Posh clawed their way back in front, Lyle Taylor equalised for Wimbledon, only for Nichols to strike the winner five minutes into added time.

The first effort of the game fell to Andy Barcham, who fired in a lovely shot from 20 yards out which was pushed over by home keeper Ben Alnwick, while Gwion Edwwards had the ball in the back of the net for Posh, but an offside flag cut his celebrations short.

Instead, it was Wimbledon who took the lead when Whelpdale, who started his pro career at Peterborough, and playing only his second game for the Dons, flicked on a corner at the near post which beat everyone to nestle in the far corner.

Darius Charles should have doubled their lead soon after when he put a free header from a free kick just wide, and Wimbledon came out for the second half intent on adding to their lead rather than sitting on it, Dominic Poleon coming closest to doing so as he drew a fine save from Alnwick.

But two goals in as many minutes midway through the second 45 turned the tie on its head, Nichols first heading in a cross from the right from point blank range before Paul Taylor smashed the ball home after the Dons failed to clear a free kick.

Wimbledon should have had an instant reply when a neat reverse pass from Jake Reeves put in Barcham, who had the whole goal to aim at but somehow managed to hit the crossbar instead.

Instead, it was left to sub Lyle Taylor, last season's top scorer, to capitalise on some sloppy Posh defending to slot home Wimbledon's equaliser from the edge of the area with 12 minutes left.

But with extra time looming, that man Nichols struck again deep into injury time, scrambling home from a corner to win it for Peterborough.
