Gosport Borough 3-0 Hayes & Yeading

Hayes & Yeading remain perilously placed just above the Conference South trapdoor after being swept aside by fellow strugglers Gosport Borough on Tuesday night.

United are just one point above Maidenhead and Whitehawk in the race to beat the drop but do boast two games in hand on the latter.

After the fine performance and three points at home to bottom-of-the-table Dorchester on Saturday, H&Y fans were hopeful ahead of last night’s trip to Privett Park.

However, a suspected calf injury to Ben Gerring in the first-half summed up the pain the travelling faithful had to endure over these 90 minutes.

Mikhael Jaimez-Ruiz has been in excellent form in recent weeks between the sticks for Hayes & Yeading, but here was nothing he could do about the opener.

Rory Williams collected the ball in the left channel and fed Dan Wooden, with the Gosport number 11 smashing home a stunning volley to break the deadlock.

Then came the injury to Gerring, with rumblings it could keep him out for the rest of the season, as Chimdi Akubuine came off the bench and Ben Brown moved to centre-half.

Into the second-half and it didn’t take long for the hosts to double their advantage, Ryan Scott curling home with a low strike from distance.

Ten minutes later and it was game over.

Striker Justin Bennett did well to find Williams and the creator of the opener became the scorer of the third goal to make sure of the points for Borough.

Luke Williams won a late free-kick in a dangerous area, however Jack Mills missed the target with the set-piece and the game was up for Phil Babb’s men.
