Hayes & Yeading United 2-3 Gosport Borough

Hayes & Yeading United are still looking for their first win this year despite a battling performance in last night’s defeat to Gosport Borough.

Phil Babb’s side have now gone 10 Conference South games without a win and will fall into the relegation zone if Farnborough win beat yesterday’s opponents on Saturday.

United showed signs of life at York Road though after failing to throw in the towel despite going two goals down on a terrible playing surface in Maidenhead.

Dan Wooden bundled home the opener on 49 minutes and some comedy defending eventually led to Dean Inman heading into his own goal midway through the second period.

Gosport looked to be in cruise control after that second went in but Babb’s boys had other ideas and dug in to try and wrestle the points away from the Hampshire outfit.

Two minutes later and United were back in it as Christian Smith curled in a beautiful free-kick from the edge of the area.

But the door was slammed shut by Justin Bennett as he coolly rolled home a penalty to make it 3-1. Or so it seemed.

Keeper Nathan Ashmore was sent off for handling outside the box, allowing Smith to repeat his trick with the set-piece with two minutes to go but it was too little too late for the hosts.

United ran out of time and will be keen spectators at Gosport this weekend, hoping their conquerors can do them a favour by sinking Spencer Day’s men this weekend.
