Capital Cup - first round

Milton Keynes Dons 3-1 AFC Wimbledon

More than a 1,000 AFC fans were second time unlucky at the home of the biggest rivals.

AFC got nothing out of the first historic meeting with the so-called Franchise FC in 2012, and they got nothing out of this too.

Three and out: Neil Ardley gestures

In fact, they were left to count the cost after what looked a bad injury for defender Jack Smith.

The full-back mixed with MKD’s Danny Green and came off worst in a full-blooded challenge on 10 minutes.

Smith lay prone for a full more three minutes before he was stretchered off in distress ominously holding his shoulder.

Matt Tubbs shot low hard from inside the box but David Martin pushed away, with Sean Rigg just short of converting the rebound. But it was a false dawn.

Having in all truth dominated the first 19 minutes, MK took the lead from a corner when Kyle McFadzean converted with a clever flick of his heel past a stranded James Shea.

A mis-headed clearance from Ben Reeves on the stroke of half time saw Rigg flash the ball across the box with Tubbs only a toe poke from levelling.

The last thing AFC needed arrived after just four minutes into the second half.

Misery: Kyle McFadzean (L) celebrates after scoring the first goal for MK Dons

A drive forward from Lee Hodson picked out Daniel Powell and he smacked a shot from outside the box – and again beat Shea at his near post.

When Benik Afobe robbed Alan Bennett and finished with aplomb, there were some in the away end wishing it was December, 2012 all over again.

There was a bit of that when Matt Tubbs converted a penalty in the final minute and heralded a mini pitch invasion, just like the first time.
