AFC Wimbledon 1-1 Plymouth Argyle

Plymouth striker Ruben Reid struck a late equaliser to make it a frustrating end to 2013 for AFC Wimbledon.

Michael Smith's tenth goal of the season looked to have secured three points in the final game of the year but Reid scored two minutes from time to snatch a point for the visitors.

Neal Ardley made one change to the side that was beaten by Southend on Boxing Day as Alan Bennett came in for George Francomb.

Jim Fenlon and Callum Kennedy provided the width as attacking full-backs in a new-look 5-3-2 formation at Kingsmeadow.

Two minutes in and Charlie Sheringham should have given the hosts the lead. Kennedy's cross was headed back across goal by Bennett but a stretching Sheringham couldn't divert it goalwards.

Caolan Lavery had the first sight of goal for Plymouth at the Eco House end. The Greens number 13 rose to meet a corner but his header bounced over Ross Worner's crossbar.

Worner's gloves were warmed moments later though as Lewis Alessandra cut inside on the far touchline and unleashed a swerving shot that had the Dons keeper worried.

Smith, playing in his penultimate game for Wimbledon, then tested Luke McCormick at the other end after being put through by a weighted pass from Sheringham.

Allesandra was again given too much time as the first half drew to a close, however his long-range effort was beaten away by Worner and the deadlock remained unbroken at the break.

That changed just seconds after the restart though as Smith got on the end of another Kennedy centre and powered his header past McCormick to put Wimbledon in front.

Plymouth immediately had a golden opportunity to draw level. The lively Allesandra found himself in on goal, six yards out, but somehow scooped his shot over the bar.

Barry Fuller, who had been excellent at the back all afternoon, was forced off with a knock with 20 minutes remaining and was replaced by the returning Will Antwi.

Ardley then made another change, bringing Jack Midson off the bench to replace Sheringham as the Dons searched for the killer second goal in front of the biggest crowd of the season.

Plymouth made a double change of their own and almost grabbed an equaliser when skipper Conor Houriane's free-kick fooled everybody in blue and almost crept in at the far post.

It was becoming an onslaught for the last 10 minutes but Worner and the Dons defence were standing up to the challenge and dealing with everything the Pilgrims threw at them.

That was until two minutes from time when Reid broke free of Bennett and smashed home an unstoppable effort to break Wimbledon hearts.
