Shrewsbury Town 1-2 Chelsea

Chelsea had a tough fight in the League Cup at fourth-tier Shrewsbury Town, but finally came out on top thanks to a late own goal.

A changed Blues side looked well below par for much of the game, but edged a proper ding-dong of a cup tie.

Jose Mourinho showed the Shrews no mercy with his team selection – which included no less than four Champions League winners and one World Cup winner.

Opener: Didier Drogba put Chelsea ahead

The home side threatened an upset – with a good opening that featured three early corners, and put Petr Cech into action at least twice.

They were well-organised all round – with good attacking pressure, and a firm back line.

Chelsea, meanwhile, looked like the League Two side – lumping the ball, failing to connect passes, and appearing generally jaded.

One cast iron chance was wasted when Mohamed Salah ran half the pitch to set up a high ball for Andre Schurrle in the box – only for the German to head away from Jayson Leutwiler's goal.

Decisive: Jermaine Grandison scores an own goal to send the Blues through

Straight form the break, Chelsea looked a changed team.

Three minutes into the second half Schurrle, so wasteful in the first half, found Salah – who had been no better.

The Egyptian laid off to Didier Drogba – who sent the ball into the net with a tap around the keeper.

Chelsea did what they do so often after taking a lead, and slacked off.

Shrewsbury did the opposite and, following the introduction of Andy Mangan in the 76th minute – it was just 84 seconds before he found the net.

Chelsea were found to be all over the pace at a corner, and the substitute was the man who got the last touch in a goalmouth melee.

The New Meadow went into uproar – a record crowd of 10,210 in full party mode.

But it couldn't last.

Four minutes later sub Willian sent over a cross for Drogba, which was reached first by Jermaine Grandison – who put it past his own keeper.

Chelsea advance into the next round of the League Cup – a trophy Mourinho has made no secret about wanting to win.
