Diego Costa sought to kill talk about a departure from Chelsea as he scored the winner for the Blues against Hull to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to eight points.

The Spaniard tucked home in the seventh minute of first half added time, brought about by Gary Cahill's collision with Ryan Mason that saw the Tigers man stretchered off, and celebrated by mimicking talking with his hands.

The Chelsea captain sealed the victory when he powered a header at the back post from Cesc Fabregas' free kick to wrap up the points for a Chelsea side that were nowhere near their best.

Here are the key talking points from Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea and Diego Costa are very much at peace – for now

Goal: Diego Costa

If you were expecting a standoffish silence between Stamford Bridge and Diego Costa, then you were in the wrong place.

Costa's first name was sung almost from the off, having returned from that contentious back injury, amid reports of strong interest from the Chinese Super League.

Chelsea's fans backed their man all the way, and it looked like there was a deal going on here: we'll give you the love, you give us the goals.

And, deep into nine minutes of first half injury time due to a nasty head injury to Hull's Ryan Mason, the deal was sealed.

Costa side-footed in from a Victor Moses cross – and the place was in joyous uproar.

After talking with his feet, Costa used his celebration to talk with his hands.

“Blah, blah, blah!” he said.

But until you sign a new deal - the talk just won't go away, Diego.

Ref Neil Swarbrick courted controversy

Referee Neil Swarbrick

Curtis Davies, subbed by Marco Silva on the hour with a yellow to his name, could have had a red on top of that.

Marcos Alonso could easily have conceded a penalty for his poor challenge on Abel Hernandez.

And there were questions over whether what could have been an earlier Costa opener really was offside – dependent on whether or not you considered Pedro to be crucial in the move.

It is a tough job, and refs are more under scrutiny than ever before.

There were plenty of other calls that Neil Swarbrick made just right, and this was not a poor performance by a long way.

But it was a game that showed just how close some calls can be, and how much pressure there is for the officials to get them just right.

Will the real Eden Hazard please stand-up?

Eden Hazard

There were plenty of pretty average performances from the team in Blue.

But Eden Hazard looked so out of sorts, some questioned whether or not he was actually fully fit.

It is a version of Hazard that has become quite familiar in recent weeks: and is a log way short of the levels of ability and talent we all know him to have.

Perhaps a weekend off next time around, for the visit of Brentford in the cup, so that he might recoup his full powers for Liverpool away the following midweek?

This capped-off an all-round great weekend for Chelsea

Gary Cahill

Defeat for Liverpool, a shared draw for Tottenham and Manchester City, and only a last minute penalty saving Arsenal's blushes – things were looking good going into this match.

But it would mean little without three points for the Blues.

They never looked especially comfortable here, and were well below their best in most quarters, but they also never looked like slipping-up.

Things were tense until Gary Cahill, whoo seldom put a foot wrong, added a second headed goal on 81 minutes.

And, as the chasing pack continued to squabble among themselves, Antonio Conte's side rose to eight points clear.

Antoio Conte can do very little wrong in the eyes of Chelsea fans

Antonio Conte

The way this club has taken its new Italian to its heart, and the rapidity with which it has done it, is credit to Antonio Conte's character and ability.

He is yet to win a trophy for Blues, of course, but he can very nearly walk on water in this place already.

His name was sung at intervals throughout, and he wasted no time in returning the favour.

Chelsea loves Conte; Conte loves Chelsea – and as long as their present dominance of the Premier League continues, you can't see that love affair ending.
