Brentford produced a first-half horror show as they were hammered at home by Burnley after James Tarkowski refused to play.

The defender pulled out on the eve of the contest, with Jack O'Connell taking his place in the side.

Head coach Dean Smith said: "We had a chat yesterday and he said it wasn't right for him to play against Burnley tonight. I told him I thought he was making a mistake. He's a good lad, I like him, but he's a young lad still and he'll learn from it.

"It's one of those things that happens and we have to move on. It's not about one player, it's about the rest of the team. We move on quickly and get on with tonight's game."

The squad are furious with the wantaway defender and it appeared to affect their concentration as the Clarets cut them apart at will with Scott Arfield, Joey Barton and George Boyd all scored fine strikes.

Alan Judge, who Burnley had an offer rejected for on the eve of the game, would have impressed his prospective employers with his attitude and he pulled one back.

Dean Smith made two other changes with Marco Djuricin and Sergi Canos replacing Lasse Vibe in the starting line-up.

Burnley attacked with pace and verve from the off and it was no surprise when they took the lead after 11 minutes.

Former Bee Andre Gray picked up a Stephen Ward and the striker laid off Arfield who curled the ball past David Button into the top right corner.

It was 2-0 on the half-hour mark and Barton struck a perfect free kick which started out wide of the post before curling back in via the inside of the post.

It soon became three as, six minutes before the break, Boyd struck a sumptuous volley that Button could do nothing about.

Smith gave his side a rocket at half-time after a gutless performance and hooked the invisible Marco Djuricin and Sergi Canos, bringing on Lasse Vibe and Sam Saunders.

There was more urgency from the Bees and Alan Judge cruised past Matt Lowton before firing a shot past Tom Heaton.

The Irishman went close with a free kick of his own but it hit the side netting as Brentford threw everything at Burnley in the second half.

But it wasn't enough as Dean Smith's side suffered four defeats on the trot.
