Reading had just signed left winger Lee Payne for £60,000 from Newcastle as they went into the local derby with Brentford at Griffin Park on March 13, 1989.

Despite his promising debut it was a frustrating game for the visitors who lost to a late Andy Sinton penalty after Michael Gilkes had fouled Richard Cadette.

It was the third time Brentford had led in the match with Trevor Senior and Linden Jones equalising after each of the Bees' first two strikes.

Martin Hicks, who had attracted criticism before the match, impressed in a tough battle with Gary Blissett.
