Martin Allen says his players need help after an insipid defeat to Accrington Stanley at the Hive on Saturday.

Michael Gash’s fifth goal in seven games was sandwiched by an own goal from Sam Togwell and a strike from Stanley’s Sean McConville as the Bees suffered their third consecutive defeat.

And Barnet boss Allen admits that his side need a confidence boost before their next match against York.

He said: “The players need some help at the moment, they need help.

“They didn’t set out from their houses with the intention of not playing well. I need to look after them and guide them forward.

“We have had two excellent home performances here before today. We need to keep calm, and help them through. They’re good players and great people.”

On the goal trail: Michael Gash

The Bees have fallen to 21st in League Two and haven’t won since their 3-1 victory at home against Dagenham and Redbridge.

But the Barnet manager is refusing to press the panic button, and is backing his side to find form sooner rather than later.

He added: “They’ve got it in them, and without a shadow of a doubt they will come bouncing back.

“There’s bound to be little spells like this, we had little spells like this last season. You have to guide them through it and look after them.

“They are performers. I don’t think we played very well last week. We had a little bit of a go today but we lost far too many battles.”

Barnet’s sluggish start would have seen them fall behind had it not been for on-loan goalkeeper Max Crocombe.

Alert: Max Crocombe

The New Zealand youth international, whose loan expires on the weekend, made a wonderful save to deny Billy Kee’s shot from the edge of the box in the opening minutes.

And the narrow escape seemed to spark the Bees from their slumber, with Luke Gambin’s stinging effort from range forcing Jason Mooney into action.

But just as the Bees were beginning to match their dangerous opponents, they fell behind after a swift counter-attack from Josh Windass saw the 21-year-old hammer a low ball across goal which Togwell diverted beyond the stranded Crocombe.

Windass, son of former Middlesbrough and Hull striker Dean, was a constant menace with his lung-bursting pace and he nearly doubled the visitors’ lead when he rounded Crocombe, only to be deemed offside.

But after Stanley were nearly gifted a second own goal - with Bira Dembele’s mis-hit clearance rocketing back into his goalkeeper’s hands - Gash slammed the hosts level.

Assist: Mauro Vilhete

Mauro Vilhete’s fine delivery into the striker was inch-perfect and September’s League Two player of the month made no mistake from 18 yards.

The second half was dominated by a series of mis-timed challenges and injuries, but it was the visitors who made the telling contribution.

Striker Kee played a wonderfully timed pass to McConville who darted an effort off the far post and beyond Crocombe.

Piero Mingoia and Matt Crooks both came close to sealing the match for the Reds, with Crocombe and Dembele respectively making wonderful blocks to keep Barnet in the game.

But a late effort from Aaron McLean and a bullet header from Dembele couldn’t break a resilient Stanley defence as the Bees fell to their second home defeat of the season.
