Plymouth 1-2 AFC Wimbledon

AFC Wimbledon completed another impressive fightback to take three points from their long trip to Plymouth this afternoon.

Conor Hourihane broke the deadlock in spectacular fashion for the hosts but Kwesi Appiah and Jack Midson struck for the Dons to complete a superb turnaround.

There were two changes from the side that drew 2-2 with Newport County two days earlier as Tom Richards recovered from illness and Harry Pell came back into midfield.

Jim Fenlon and Jake Nicholson were the two men to make way as manager Neal Ardley refreshed his starting XI for this Easter Monday fixture.

Ardley stressed the importance of making a good start after the weekend stalemate with the Exiles, which saw them fall two goals behind before mounting a second-half rally.

But they were yet again chasing the game after just eight minutes in Devon as Hourihane’s spectacular 30-yard curler gave the home side an early lead.

Barry Fuller and goalkeeper Ross Worner exchanged words in the aftermath of the goal, which left Wimbledon with another mountain to climb at Home Park.

Frustrations boiled over but it wasn’t a bad start from the visitors and their persistence paid off shortly before half-time.

Appiah unselfishly squared for Midson, who seems to love playing against the Pilgrims, and he duly slotted home his third goal in a Wimbledon shirt on this ground to level the score.

It was a great end to the half by Ardley’s side and they had turned the tables completely 13 minutes into the second period.

Timing his run to perfection, Appiah made it two goals in two games by sprinting clear of the defence and keeping his cool with a composed finish past the onrushing Jake Cole.

It proved to be the winner, with substitute Danny Hylton only denied a late third for the visitors by the post, and it is a result which lifts the Dons up to 14th in the table.
