Accrington Stanley await AFC Wimbledon in next Saturday League Two playoff first leg after Dons signed off their regular season with a narrow win over Newport.

Debutant Toyosi Olusanya came off the bench to first win and then score the penalty which settled matters for Neal Ardley’s much changed side.

And with Bristol Rovers scoring a 90th minute winner against relegated Dagenham & Redbridge it means Stanley who failed to beat Stevenage slipped out of the automatic promotion places.

Dons’ victory was overshadowed by a serious-looking injury to Connor Smith who was stretchered off in the first half and raken straight to St Georges’ Hosp[ital for scans.

The injury arose from a clash of heads in the 25th minute with Lenell John-Lewis which left the former Watford midfielder prone on the ground for around 10 minutes.

Man of the match Adebayo Akinfenwa fired narrowly over early on and Rhys Murphy was also off target before Smith’s injury drama unfolded.

The Oldham loanee missed a glorious chance in the stoppage-time added for the incident, missing from a few yards out from another Akinfenwa knockdown.

John-Lewis brought a superb save from the recalled James Shea after the break before The Wombles took charge.

Murphy forced Rhys Taylor into a superb tip over before Akinfenwa headed a pinpoint Callum Kennedy header back across goal and against the base of the far post.

Shea’s then produced his second excellent stop of the game from substitute Souleymane Coulibaly in an increasingly rare County raid.

But it was Olusanya who wrote the last day story, forcing Ben Davies to fell him inside the box before taking the ball and firing confidently into the bottom corner from the spot.

And so the knockouts begin.
