The curse of the Manager of the Month Award struck again as Garry Haylock's side fell off the top of the league table thanks to Braintree's classic smash 'n' grab victory.
There weren't many chances created in the first half as both sides struggled to retain possession. It was the 24th minute before any significant threat on goal, as United's Scott Fitzgerald put a half volley from Danny Allen-Page's cross just wide of the far post.
James Mulley finished a forceful run into the area with a powerful shot which cleared the crossbar and minutes later Fitzgerald was again just off target with a shot from Ram Marwa's lay off.
It was near to half time before Braintree got close to a goal, with Sean Marks turning and volleying wide and then just failing to divert Billy Burgess's shot across goal into the net.
The second half started better with Aaron Howe diving to save Louis Riddle's volley. A miskick from Howe was seized upon by Danny Hockton soon afterwards but the keeper atoned with a smart save to tip his shot wide.
A quick free kick on 55 minutes was to settle the match. Marks was sent clear of the hesitant home defence and despite Tom Cadmore's best efforts to clear,he fired the visitors in front.
After that, there was little action in either goalmouth as Braintree successfully killed off the momentum of the game.
The hosts' only response was a Steven Gregory cross which just evaded Fitzgerald's head in front of goal late on.
