Brentford 1-0 Preston

Brentford were promoted to the Championship after Alan Judge's first-half penalty earned them victory over Preston.

The Irishman held his nerve from the spot to fire the Bees into the second tier for the first time since 1993 after rivals Leyton Orient and Rotherham both slipped up.

Brentford fans had to endure an agonising four minutes of stoppage-time after Judge missed the chance to wrap up victory when he fluffed a second penalty, but it didn't matter as the Bees held on to seal a top-two finish.

Spot on: Judge fired home the crucial penalty

Mark Warburton made two changes from the side that lost at Swindon last weekend, with George Saville and Stuart Dallas replacing Toumani Diagouraga and the suspended Adam Forshaw.

Judge forced an early save out of Declan Rudd, while Saville saw a shot deflected over as the hosts made all of the early running.

However, the Bees had a scare at the other end as James Tarkowski's last-ditch tackle denied Craig Davies a clear shooting chance.

But Brentford found the breakthrough just before the half-hour mark. Saville was hauled down in the box by Bailey Wright, and Judge sent Rudd the wrong way from 12 yards.

The hosts almost doubled their lead at the start of the second half, but Clayton Donaldson's shot crashed against the post and then Rudd before going behind for a corner.

Jake Bidwell's mistake almost proved costly when he lost possession cheaply in his own half, only for Chris Humphrey to drag his shot wide, while Alan Browne went close with a header.

The Bees were gifted the chance to wrap up victory when Donaldson was brought down by Jack King in the area.

But Judge slipped on his run up and scuffed his spot-kick over the bar in front of the Ealing Road end.

However, the miss didn't matter as Brentford held on. Their promotion was confirmed as news filtered through that Rotherham had lost at Wolves.
