Yoann Barbet is not a fan of playing at left back but, as long as he's playing, he'll do whatever Brentford head coach Dean Smith wants him to do on the pitch.

The Frenchman has been covering for Rico Henry, while Josh Clarke who previously filled in has been playing at right back with Henrik Dalsgaard injured.

Barbet would prefer to be playing in the middle but admits playing left back is a lot better than sitting on the bench.

He said: “I'm trying to do my best. The gaffer knows that I don't really like to be a left back but I'd rather that than be on the bench.

“If the gaffer needs me there I'll do it. If he needs me as a striker I'll do it. The only thing is to help the team.

“As the saying goes, alone we go quick but together we go far. I'm happy to play and be consistent and play a few games in a row.

“I was playing two or three games and then be on the bench. It's been good to play a few games this season.”

Barbet has had to adapt his training methods and ensure he has the stamina to last 90 minutes in a more energetic position where a great left back is an offensive threat as well as a solid defender.

He added: “It's more about running because when you're centre back. Sometimes I run less but I'm clever to anticipate things.

“You have to run more as you can be more offensive. I'm working on that during the week to not get tired so quickly and not be substituted.”

Yoann Barbet and Chris Mepham celebrate the win

Barbet is not the only player to be playing out of position with midfielder Romaine Sawyers having to play the role of a striker against Fulham and the Frenchman was full of praise for his team-mate.

He explained: “Romaine was really good. We know he's not a striker but he was playing as a false nine.

“When you have a clever player like him up front. The third goal was great against Fulham. He did a great job for the second at QPR.

“When you don't have the players on the pitch, you have to adapt. I'm not a left back but I'll give my best.”
