Veteran striker Paul Hayes may have recently passed two milestones, but he shows no signs of slowing up, AFC Wimbledon's defenders have been warned.

The 31 year old made his 500th career appearance in last Saturday's win at Morecambe, having bagged his 100th Football League goal in the win over Cambridge a fortnight before.

And Hayes, who has also knocked in goals for the likes of Scunthorpe, Barnsley, Preston, Charlton and Brentford, is still a danger man for Wycombe, according to Tim Street of the Bucks Examiner .

He said: “Paul was already well thought of at Wycombe, having scored six goals in as many games on loan from Charlton two years ago, and since coming back, after a slow start, he has bagged six in 12 games, including a stunner against Stevenage.

Midfield threat: Peter Murphy

“Following a difficult spell at Brentford, and having been released by Scunthorpe in the summer, he looks happy with his game once more. League Two might be more his level these days, but he still know where the back of the net is.”

Before Hayes' recent goal glut, for a long time this season, Wycombe's top scorer was Peter Murphy , a midfielder signing from Accrington in the summer.

Street said: “Peter has a knack of getting into the box late and picking up any loose ends, or scoring from set pieces, and isn't afraid of putting his head in where it hurts – as a broken nose suffered scoring the winner against Mansfield will testify.

“Being a Scouser, Murphy models his game on Steven Gerrard, and having been a striker in his youth, has never lost his nose for goal and is always a threat.”

Shrew-d capture: Joe Jacobson

A third summer signing is Wycombe's third danger man, defender Joe Jacobson having arrived from Shrewsbury Town.

Street added: “With such a young back four, including two centre halves in Aaron Pierre and Alfie Mawson both aged 21 or under, it's important to have an experienced voice back there, and Joe has that in blundles.

“He also has an excellent set piece, and is one of the best crossers of the ball that I have seen at this level.”
