Fulham's Ashkan Dejagah came close to inspiring Iran to one of the greatest World Cup shocks of all time against Argentina yesterday.

Dejagah was at the forefront of a positive Iranian performance against the South Americans before Lionel Messi broke their hearts in stoppage time with the only goal of the game.

But before that the Fulham midfielder came close to being the hero himself when in the second half he was involved in two of Iran's best moments.

First the 27-year-old had a call for a penalty turned down when he appeared to be fouled in the area by Pablo Zabaleta and then saw his header brilliantly tipped over by Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

It means Iran will need to beat already eliminated Bosnia and Herzegovina and hope the Argentine's can do them a favour against Nigeria in order to qualify from Group F.

Chelsea duo Kenneth Omerou and John Mikel Obi both started while team-mate Victor Moses was an unused substitute as the Nigerians beat Bosnia 1-0 to put themselves in the driving seat to join Argentina in the second round.

Mikel was booked while Omeruo played just over an hour as Peter Odemwingie's goal was enough to ensure Bosnia will be on the plane home.

Elsewhere, Chelsea's Andre Schürrle and former Old Meadonians, Barnet and Harrow Borough star, Albert Adomah were unused substitutes for Germany and Ghana respectively as the two teams drew 2-2 in Group G.
