Wigan Athletic have asked for permission to speak to Brentford manager Uwe Rosler about becoming Owen Coyle's successor.
The German is the frontrunner for the vacant post at the DW Stadium after an impressive two-and-a-half years in charge at Griffin Park.
Rosler, whose family are based in the North West, could hold talks with the Latics as early as tomorrow if the Bees give the green light.
However, the League One outfit will be entitled to compensation should he move on as Rosler's deal in west London doesn't expire until 2015.
Wigan have been without a manager since Coyle left the club on Monday following three home defeats in a week.
