Brentford have been working on tactical shape as well as analysing individual and team performances over the international break.

There had been concerns about the squad's fitness, especially at the start of the season.

Indeed, this was the reason given in public for Marinus Dijkhuizen's sacking with Brentford unhappy with training methods.

But current head coach Dean Smith believes it means the squad are able to be fitter than their opponents going into the final games of this season.

He said: “If players aren't fit by the Easter break, then you've got a problem. We've been working on the tactical side of things.

“We've been looking at areas to improve. We've done a lot of video work individually and collectively. It's given them a chance to recharge their batteries as well.

“(The poor methods at the start of the season) have actually has probably helped us. Towards the end of the season, they should be getting fitter.

“Historically, teams start to flag but it should give us the opportunity to outrun opposition teams and we do do that.”

Smith also revealed that the club missed out on signing three players in the closing stages of the loan window.

He added: “The player didn't feel he was 100 per cent and he didn't feel it was right to come.

“Another one, the manager changed his mind and the other we couldn't get in touch with as he was on international duty.”
