Every footballer dreams of playing on the big stage and Wembley’s Issah Abubakar is no different.

The Lions striker has established himself as part of the first-team setup at Vale Farm this season and is closing in on his 20th appearance already.

With 17 games and two goals under his belt, Abubakar was left frustrated this week as matches with South Park and Tuesday’s trip to Enfield were postponed.

Abubakar’s journey to this point has been a little different to the other players playing regularly in the non-leagues.

“I’m a Ghanaian national,” he explains. “My elder brother brought me to England to continue my football career.”

“His friend introduced me to [assistant manager] George Green and was invited to train with Wembley and I got in.

“I want to take in the training and matches, with the encouragement of the managers and players.

“My achievement is to play well in Wembley and secure myself a bigger club in and out of England.”

The 21-year-old first linked up with Ian Bates’ side back in February, but it is only now that he is becoming an integral cog in the Wembley machine.

Abubakar insists this was not down to a lack of skill or effort, rather a need to build up his match fitness for the long slog of the Combined Counties Premier season.

“[Being a bit part player] was not really frustrating as I think I was just on low performance this season trying to be in good shape,” he added.

With that now taken care of he now hopes to cement his place and make a valuable contribution to The Lions.

“My dream is to stay in the first team, be a regular in the league and score always that will make me more comfortable. My target is to score in every game if God permits.”

Wembley are set to host Croydon this Saturday and head into the game on the back of two wins from their two most recent outings.

“We’re trying to correct mistakes and win,” concluded Abubakar. “We are focusing on what is ahead of us.”
