Gordon Bartlett's pre-season of headaches show no sign of abating with less than a week to the big kick-off.

Saturday's 3-1 win over QPR U21s was Wealdstone's third in row, but given the will he won't he saga of Connor Calcutt and injuries sustained by goalkeeper Jonathan North and summer signing Dale Binns, boss Bartlett is still left with more questions than answers.

Absences for births, holidays and injuries have all contributed to the him not being able to field a first XI throughout the summer so far.

And these latest twists mean he is none the wiser as to who will start the curtain-raiser away to Bath.

He said: "This pre-season has brought more problems than I care to remember and I've been through a few pre-seasons don't forget. This one has been difficult enough by any stretch of the imagination.

"It was difficult enough to think of a first XI for next week before today, let alone after today. What I can say is anyone who we have asked to go in and do a job has gone in and done it well."

Injured: Jonathan North

Issues at either end of the pitch will be of most concern to a manager starting his 21st season in charge of Stones.

Calcutt, back playing after the broken leg he suffered last season played his second game in a row for Stones, scoring from the spot, and he was involved in the squad photos before kick-off.

However, the 21-year-old, released by Stevenage last month and who recently underwent a weeks' trial at National South rivals St Albans, has still to sign on the dotted line despite being made an offer by the club, though more talks are planned.

And with last year's player of the season, North having limped out of Saturday's action with a problem behind the knee, Bartlett faces a race against time to find an alternative custodian for the journey south-west.

West Ham youngster Tim Brown who has spent most of pre-season at The Vale could be one option while Wycombe shot stopper Alex Lynch, who played against Stones in the recent friendly has since been made available for loan.

Assistant: Scott McGleish

Bartlett added: "Connor is here and has played. I have spoken to him on a fortnightly sort of basis ever since he broke his leg when he was with us before, so I was as surprised as anybody when he went to St Albans, butnthat was while I was on holiday.

"He spoke to Scott (McGleish), he spoke to Howard (Krais), everybody thought he was going to be here for the Wycombe game and he decided to go and play at St Albans.

"Everyone is entitled to go and do what they want to do. At the end of the day we've spoken to him the other night and I'll speak to him again today.

"I'd like to sign him and we have got to do something about the goalkeeping situation. Jonathan might come back and be all right, but it has been something that has been there or thereabouts with him for a little while.

"Neither Jonathan or Binnsy's knocks looked clever, so for every step forward we take at the moment we seem to take one back in a different area."
