Mark Warburton admitted Brentford shot themselves in the foot in their 1-0 defeat against Sheffield Wednesday for failing to take their chances.

It has been the narrative in recent weeks for the Bees to have territory and possession but fail to create many openings and, when they do, fail to take them.

Brentford have had to rely on 25-yard wonderstrikes in the main since the international break, most notably at Fulham and Derby where easier chances were missed than the ones scored.

Missed chances: Brentford's Andre Gray

And Warburton was left disappointed as this came back to haunt his team with Kieran Lee taking his only clear chance of the 90 minutes to give the home side a victory their play scarcely deserved but taught Brentford a lesson in taking opportunities.

He said: “It was very disappointing. We can still get 80 points and we didn't take our chances and, all credit to Stuart and his team, they took theirs so we move on.

“We came here and we looked to play from the first whistle. After half time, we dominated possession and created some good chances. You've got to take your chances.

“We hit the bar in the first half. Andre pulled one wide. Judgey had a good chance as did Jota or Tarky.”

The goal came from a lapse at the back as Jon Toral was beaten in the air and then the Bees failed to deal with the loose ball as Lee fired home.

Warburton added: “Butts' distribution was outstanding. We knew that Wednesday would look to push on.

“He tried to drop it into Jon Toral and he was closed on. It fell their way and they had three v three. Unfortunately it fell into the path of the man coming in and he scored.”
