Matt Smith and his Fulham team had a day to forget against Reading on Saturday.

The striker, signed from Leeds on transfer deadline day, was sent off just 18 minutes into his debut for a challenge with his studs showing on Royals midfielder Hope Akpan.

And things got worse four minutes later when Glen Murray headed the Royals in front at the Madejski Stadium on Saturday.

Murray added a second after the break and with Nick Blackman adding a third, there were once again chants for Whites boss' Felix Magath to go.

The German said he did not hear the calls and claimed the reason Smith was sent off because he had been provoked earlier.

"Sure, he made a mistake,” said Magath. “But after seconds he was wrestled and that was frustrating him.

“If you look at the second action and you don’t see the first, you have a player who wants to protect himself."
