He might not have had the best luck in the top flight having been relegated from the Premier League a record five times (Crystal Palace, Wimbledon, Ipswich Town, Charlton Athletic and Portsmouth), but Icelandic defender Hermann Hreiðarsson will always be remembered fondly by Brentford supporters.

The centre-back started his career at his local club Íþróttabandalag Vestmannaeyja (rolls off the tongue doesn't it?) before moving to Palace and earning his first relegation from the Premier League with the Eagles in 1997-98.

Hreiðarsson started the following season in Division One (now the Championship) with Palace, and played ten times for them in the first six weeks of the campaign.

It was in September 1998 that Hreiðarsson arrived at Griffin Park, following former Palace chairman Ron Noades to the west of the capital for a fee of £750,000.

The big Icelandic defender spent just 13 months at Brentford, but what a time that was. He made his debut on September 26, a 3-0 win over Darlington.

Hreiðarsson helped the Bees to the Division Three title that season, scoring six times (plus once for Palace) and contributing to an impressive 14 clean-sheets over the course of the campaign.

The defender started the Bees' Division Two campaign by getting sent off late in the game in a goalless draw at Bristol Rovers and went on to play ten games for Brentford before he was sold to Wimbledon for a fee of £2.5million - a record for the west London club.

Hreiðarsson's first season at the Dons ended in his second relegation from the Premier League. He went on to record three more - with Ipswich Town, Charlton Athletic and Portsmouth. Only Welsh striker Nathan Blake can equal that record of five relegations.
