Tim Sherwood is the early favourite to replace Harry Redknapp as QPR manager.

Redknapp today resigned from his post and claims he is calling it quits as he prepares to undergo knee surgery.

Sherwood has been out of work since leaving Tottenham last summer but had been linked for the top jobs at Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion.

Gone: Harry Redknapp has quit as QPR boss

He is the 1/2 favourite to succeed Redknapp at Loftus Road while Glenn Hoddle is 5/1, Les Ferdinand is 12/1 while Gianfranco Zola, Karl Robinson, Mark Warburton and Mick McCarthy are all at 20/1.

Head of football operations Ferdinand, along with Chris Ramsey, has been placed in temporary charge of first-team affairs.

The pair worked under Redknapp during his time as Tottenham manager and then assisted Sherwood after he took over the White Hart Lane hotseat.

Redknapp said today: “I have had such a fantastic time at QPR.

"I would like to thank the Board, the players and all my staff, and especially the supporters who have been absolutely fantastic to me since I arrived at the club for their tremendous support.

“Sadly I need immediate surgery on my knee which is going to stop me from doing my job in the coming weeks. It means I won’t be able to be out on the training pitch every day, and if I can’t give 100 per cent I feel it’s better for someone else to take over the reins.

“My relationship with Tony Fernandes has been one of the highlights of my footballing career and I wish the club every success. I am confident they will survive in the Premier League this year.”

Redknapp leaves QPR having won just nine Premier League games since taking over from Mark Hughes in December and without a victory on the road all season.

He did get the club promoted back to the top-flight with victory in the Championship play-off final at Wembley last year.
