The tranfer window looks set to be frantic this summer with many clubs getting involved early as they look to avoid a final-day frenzy in order to strengthen their squads.

QPR will no doubt be as busy as anyone in the division as they look to add quality to a squad who, for the most part, failed to impress for large spells of last season.

But as well as bringing players in, it is absolute vital that Ian Holloway and Les Ferdinand prioritise keep the best players at Loftus Road if the club are to move themselves up the league this time round.

We take a look at three players who are fundamental to the Hoops this term, and why it's essential that are not sold this summer.

Alex Smithies

The first name on the list of many QPR fans. Smithies was the stand-out player for QPR last season and is quite right to be linked with a move to a promotion chasing Championship side, or even a Premier League side.

The club do have a more than capable understudy in the shape of Matt Ingram, but the former-Huddersfield stopper quite simply should be retained at all costs.

Smithies is far too good to battling relegation in the Championship, but if the club are the move forward and push towards the top half of the table then they are going to need to keep quality players such as him, or they risk facing another battle to avoid the drop this season.

Undoubtedly Smithies enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career last year, and after signing a new contract at the club, the club will be confident they can retain the stopper and match his ambitions as they plan to move closer to the top end of the table over the coming seasons.

Massimo Luongo

The 24-year-old could be a player to attract a number of suitors this summer as he is set to represent Australia at the Confederations Cup in Russia next week. Luongo is a player who has the capability of being one of the Championship's best players. Some would argue that QPR haven't seen the best of the midfielder, but it's unquestionable that an in-form Luongo could push the Hoops right up the league table.

Ian Holloway will be looking to get the best out of Luongo next season if they are to get off to a good start, but may face competition to keep the Socceroos' star if he impresses on international duty. If the club are serious about improving, it's essential that they not only maintain the midfielder's services, but look to build the team around him to get him to his best.

Conor Washington

The former-Peterborough man has endured a frustrating time since arriving at Loftus Road in January 2016. Washington clearly has the capability to be a threat at this level, as he possesses an ability to finish well, in addition to a decent burst of pace. The 25-year-old scored eight goals last season, which does need to be improved, but considering he has been mis-used this season, it isn't a bad tally.

What Washington now needs is a consistent season in a system which plays to his strengths. He has had time to settle into the league, and in my opinion, has the potential to be a real handful next season. Despite links with a move to Birmingham City, he is the kind of player who needs to be retained, and worked with to ensure the club get the best out of him week-in week-out.
