Who says it's an unlucky number? Hanworth Villa lifted the gloom at Rectory Meadow on Saturday with a first win in 13 Combined Counties Premier games.

Oddly enough, their only win so far came on the opening day of the season against Guildford City, former club of new Villa manager John Hamsher .

Guildford are also the team immediately above bottom side Villa in the table, and Satuday's 2-0 win over Chertsey Town moved the Villains to within two points of them.

Making his debut for Villa was a former Guildford player, Scott Todd, who scored just over 100 goals in more than 300 games for Ashford Town (Middx), and also turned out for Carshalton, Egham and Croydon Athletic amongst others.

But it was two other new signings who made their mark against Chertsey, the goals coming from Shane Graham, who has joined from Spelthorne Sports, and Matt Grave, who has returned to the club he has scored so many goals for in the past following spells with Egham and Slough.

Club secretary Dave Brown said: “You can't ask for much more than that from your new signings really! John has added some real quality to the squad, and it's good to see Matt coming home.

Stalemate: Bedfont & Feltham's Patrick Craig in action against Epsom Athletic

“We're under no illusions that we're still bottom, but there's a long way to go, and we're going in the right direction now. It's like starting the season again, just a bit behind the rest of the pack.

John was our stand out candidate and we're flattered he wanted to join us. We are impressed with what he has done so far, and John has been impressed by the support at the club.”

The only down side for Villa, who have no game tomorrow but visit Knaphill in the Southern Combination Cup on Tuesday night, was the dressing rooms being broken into during the game.

Premier Division rivals Bedfont Sports went down 2-1 at home to a last minute Hartley Wintney winner on Saturday, despite having drawn level only a few minutes later through Jordan Esprit. They visit Horsham YMCA in the FA Vase on Sunday and host Raynes Park Vale in the league two days later.

In Division One, Bedfont & Feltham threw away a 3-1 lead with 12 minutes left, through goals from Luke Craig, Jamal Venilor and Patrick Craig, to draw 3-3 with Epsom Athletic, while CB Hounslow United lost 3-2 at Chessington & Hook United, despite goals from Barry McWilliams and Shane O'Connell.

CB host Ash United tomorrow while Bedfont visit Farleigh Rovers before welcoming Cockfosters in the Middlesex Charity Cup on Tuesday night.
