Chelsea captain John Terry has done his best impersonation of former Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard after Sunday’s defeat to Arsenal.

The skipper, speaking after the match at Wembley, has told the fans that they will use defeat as motivation to win the league this coming season.

And Terry has reassured fans ahead of the new season that the Blues are still hungry for glory in a speech somewhat reminiscent of Gerrard’s infamous pep to his team-mates in 2014.

“It hurts. When you see them walk up, no matter if it's a friendly or a Community Shield, it's a trophy at the end of the day,” the 34-year-old said.

“At the same time it could be a blessing in disguise for us, a wake-up call. We have experience in the squad, we have the character.

“We go again and prepare ourselves for Swansea.”

But despite the former England international’s pain at seeing Arsenal lift silverware on Sunday, he pointed to the fact that only 12 of the previous 35 Community Shield winners have gone on to win the league the following season.

And Terry insisted that the match was hardly an accurate barometer of the clubs’ fortunes ahead of the new season.

“I don't think so,” he responded when asked if the match was indicative of the forthcoming season.

“It's one of them where they will probably come out and say differently. These games do mean something for sure in that it's another 90 minutes under your belt.

“But as I said before the game, win or lose I don't think you can say.”
