DJ CAMPBELL admits he was surprised to return to the QPR squad for Saturday's defeat to Liverpool.

The Hammersmith-born striker has been sidelined for two months after a fracturing a metatarsal in training back in October, and only resumed full sessions last week.

But with Heidar Helguson missing through injury, Campbell was included among the substitutes for the trip to Anfield.

And the 30-year-old got a taste of the action with a cameo after the break as Rangers returned back to west London empty handed.

“It was a surprise being involved because I haven’t had a reserve game yet, but I was delighted to play a part and disappointed not to get a better result,” said Campbell.

“It has been a frustrating start for me, but that’s football. Last year I didn’t have any injuries, it was a clean season for me. This year has been completely different, but I’m still focussed on my job and when I do get called upon hopefully I can perform.”

The former Brentford frontman will step up his recovery with a run-out for the reserves against Spurs tomorrow, and insists it won't be long until he's up to full speed.

He added: “There’s a friendly on Tuesday which I’ll be involved in, and then we’ll take it from there. Hopefully by next Sunday I’ll have a week’s training under my belt and can be involved with the first team.”
