Phil Babb reckons selfish Isaac Layne is just what Hayes & Yeading have been missing after watching the on-loan Southend United forward hit two on his debut at the weekend.

Layne bagged a brace in the 6-0 demolition of Horsham in the FA Trophy on Saturday just days after penning a one-month deal to join from the League Two outfit.

Capable of playing on either flank or through the middle, Layne partnered Pat Cox to devastating effect as the duo destroyed the Ryman Division One team at York Road.

“Isaac’s just going to give us something different,” Babb said.

“He’s very selfish. If you watched the game, he probably got 10 shots off, and he’s done well. Two goals on his debut bodes well for next weekend. The more games he gets for us, the better he’ll get.”

New strike partner: Hayes & Yeading's Pat Cox will link up with Layne

Hayes & Yeading had suffered narrow defeats to Bromley, Eastbourne and Farnborough in the run up to the Trophy tie and Babb was delighted to get things back on track and set up an away trip to either Wealdstone or St Albans on December 13.

“I was very pleased with a thoroughly professional performance from the boys,” he added. “Sometimes on a Sunday afternoon you have to create your own atmosphere, playing against a lower division side, but the boys did everything I asked of them.

“Our last three performances have been just ok. We haven’t hit the standards that we’ve set but this will give the lads confidence. We’ll go into Boreham Wood looking to get something out of it.”

Meanwhile, the club remains in deep trouble off the field as chairman Tony O’Driscoll last week admitted H&Y could fold in three months without investment.

We’ll have an exclusive update on the Beaconsfield Road situation from O’Driscoll in this week’s Gazette and right here on GetWestLondon.
