Chelsea came from behind to sneak a victory at Southampton on Saturday.

Shane Long opened the scoring at St Mary's and Chelsea looked to be growing frustrating as the second half became a scrappy battle on the south coast.

But the Blues kept plugging away and were rewarded with the points when Cesc Fabregas' fortuitous effort hauled them level and Branislav Ivanovic stole in for the winner.

That result keeps Guus Hiddink unbeaten in the Premier League since returning to the club for a second stint as manager as the Blues continue to look upwards.

It was far from plain sailing by the water in Hampshire though and there was plenty of talking points to consider for Chelsea supporters.

Let's have a look back at what we learned at St Mary's.

Blow for Pedro

Pedro of Chelsea walks off the pitch after an injury

Pedro's afternoon lasted less than 10 minutes at St Mary's.

The Spaniard pulled up with what appeared to be a hamstring injury before signalling to the bench that he could not continue.

Pedro has largely flattered to deceive since his summer switch from Barcelona, however he has started to find his feet in the last few weeks after bagging a brace in the rout of Newcastle.

Oscar, who got the nod to come on for the injured winger, is a more than an adequate replacement.

But given Pedro's recent form, Chelsea fans will be hoping he's not out for too long.

The un-masked man

Diego Costa of Chelsea throws his face mask

Diego Costa's protective face mask didn't last much longer than Pedro.

The fiery forward has been sporting the trademark black mask that has become a fashion staple at Stamford Bridge in recent seasons.

He can be intimating enough as it is, without the need for dark headgear, and Costa decided he didn't need it just before the half-hour mark.

Marching over to the bench, Costa removed the item and handed it to the staff on the bench as he clearly felt it was inhibiting his vision and ability to head the ball.

The shackles were off.

Shaky moments for Courtois

Thibaut Courtois was partly at fault for the opening goal and had his share of shaky moments before Southampton did eventually break the deadlock was eventually broken.

The big Belgian had flapped at a couple of corners and looked far from his usual assured self between the sticks.

Baba did him no favours with a sloppy back pass but he hesitated, perhaps thinking about the preceding 38 or so minutes, and paid the price as Long finished superbly.

There is no doubting Courtois' class though and he was far from the only one in a blue shirt to put in a below-par performance at St Mary's.

The whole of the defence looked vulnerable at times – was it a conidence that John Terry wasn't playing?

Hiddink shows his ruthless streak

Charlie Austin of Southampton and Baba Rahman of Chelsea

Hiddink spoke at his pre-match press conference on Friday about how it pains him to leave out players and that he had a queue of stars battering his door down for a start.

The Dutchman's policy of making few changes to his starting line-ups have become a trademark of his second stint as Blues boss.

He again resisted changes again today, for the third game in a row, but his half-time hook of Baba Rahman suggests that could be about to change.

It was a move that was more Jose Mourinho than Hiddink.

One real mistake from the Ghana international and he was off. A clear message sent to the rest of the Blues squad.

He will point to the end result as proof he made the right call.

Fighting spirit

Diego Costa of Chelsea celebrates his team's second goal

In the final days of Mourinho, Chelsea probably would have lost this game two or three-nil in the second half.

But there is more resilience about the Blues under Hiddink and they are fighting for every point and today was no different.

A spot of handbags and a spate of yellow cards could easily have thrown them off their game as the second half started in a scrappy fashion.

Yet, if anything, that spell only fired up the visitors and although Fabregas' leveller was fortuitous, there was nothing really between these two on the day and Chelsea deserved a point.
