Fulham head coach Slavisa Jokanovic believes the man in charge should be responsible for rebuilding confidence – not an outsider.

The Whites boss has refused to draft in a sports psychologist to get inside heads of talented but underperforming players – but revealed he’s had plenty of informal chats with those who do.

Joka reckons ‘contacts’ elsewhere have helped his career, but the club will fall or rise by his own hand – and no one else’s.

After Saturday’s heartening 2-1 win over MK Dons, it looks as if Joka’s tips paid off.

“Some managers and clubs have this for support,” he said.

“Generally, I believe in myself and I have enough support in the coaching team.

“I have contact with people working this way, and they have helped me informally in my professional career. Many times they can help a manager in this way.”

Jokanovic suggested a couple of weeks ago the squad went out for dinner together as part of a bonding exercise. It was an initiative that met with only partial success in the 1-1 draw at Birmingham.

Things were a whole heap better at the Cottage on Saturday.

“We don’t show the quality then, but we have chances to show what we didn’t do in the past,” he added.

Fulham are at Preston on Tuesday night knowing a win and a defeat for MK Dons at home to Wolves will leave a seven-point gap and a big breathing space at the foot of the table.
