Fulham's place in the history of English football was one of the main reasons why Slavisa Jokanovic jumped at the chance to become the club's head coach.

The Whites turned to the Serbian after sacking Kit Symons in November and the 47-year-old will take charge of his first game on Saturday against Sheffield Wednesday.

And Jokanovic admitted that English football excites him as well as the history and tradition of Fulham.

“It's football for me. It's one of the more important English clubs. I don't need to explain it so much. I expect there to be some kind of problem in this situation.

“Our obligation is to push this project up. I am ready and I spoke with the owner, Mike Rigg and I don't have any dilemma. It's the right place for me.

He added: “Football is living in this country. This is one of the reason all of the managers believe this is a great place for working in our profession.”

Jokanovic is not going to make long-term predictions and sees the process of turning Fulham from a side at the lower reaches of the Championship to one challenging for promotion as a gradual process.

He explained: “My job is step by step. Where I want to see them is difficult to explain right now. Our obligation is to improve and be better through this project.”

Jokanovic has been enthused by working with Shahid Khan, although he doesn't have any real plans to follow the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Whites owner's American Football team.

He said: “I'm not a fan (of the sport) especially. I have an opportunity to speak to Mr Khan. My impression is he's a nice person.

“He's very interested in Fulham and this project. He has been very kind and cared about my situation.

“I expect I can bring him something that he has given me in these few weeks. This is my obligation. American Football is for American people. I prefer the football we play here in Europe.”

Jokanović’s first match in charge is this Saturday (2 January) when Fulham take on Sheffield Wednesday at Craven Cottage in a 3pm kick-off.

Tickets for the match are on sale now from £25 adults and £15 juniors. All prices increase by £5 on matchday, so secure your seat in advance.
