Scott McGleish has had more clubs than most golfers, but has never been relegated – and the veteran striker is not planning to start now.

The Wealdstone forward, who this month agreed to combine his playing role with a coaching position at Grosvenor Vale, is desperate to avoid the drop from the Conference South.

McGleish was instrumental in helping Gordon Bartlett’s side move up from the Ryman Premier last season but has yet to fire in a struggling team so far this campaign.

In a career that dates back to 1993 with Edgware Town, the 40-year-old has been a success at the likes of Wycombe Wanderers and Northampton Town in the Football League. Never has he tasted the bitter pill of relegation and McGleish is desperate to help push the Stones up the table, starting with an upset against league leaders Basingstoke on Saturday.

“It’s vitally important to stay up,” he said.

“I’ve been a pro for 18 years and now played back in non-league for a couple of seasons and I’ve never had a relegation.

“I don’t want that to change that now and I know the boys are the same. Nobody wants a relegation.”

Wealdstone, who beat Met Police 4-1 in a friendly at the weekend having had no game, have now seen their fixture with Chelmsford City on October 25 postponed due to their opponents being in FA Cup fourth qualifying round action against Barnet.

The Bees remain top of the Conference Premier despite throwing away a three-goal lead to draw 3-3 with Kidderminster Harriers on Saturday. They travel to Gateshead on Saturday then host Braintree on Tuesday.
