He has certainly shown his true quality over the last week with stellar performances against Ipswich Town and Millwall, but some of Ian Holloway's comments regarding midfielder Massimo Luongo have sparked debate among football fans.

Speaking of Luongo's goal after the game last night, Holloway said: "If he starts doing that then, wow, what a player we’ve got on our hands!

“The kid’s getting better and better. I’m delighted for him. If there’s a better midfielder in the league at the moment then I’d like to see him.”

But how close is the Australian international to becoming one of the league's top midfielders?

The answer is less about form, and more about longevity.

There's no doubting what the 24-year-old is a class above most in the league when he's firing on all cylinders, and he's certainly been that since the start of the Championship campaign.

The addition of Josh Scowen has given Luongo the freedom he needs to play his natural game, allowing him to use his creativity and vision to get the QPR clock ticking.

It's not only his passing ability, but also his turn of pace and willingness to break out of midfield and become an extra man in the attacking third which has really moved his game on.

However, if he wants to become one of the league's best he will need to sustain this form over the duration of the season.

One of Luongo's main criticisms has been his consistency, which is partially understandable due to the huge distances he travel on international duty, but this is something he'll need to overcome if he's to truly excel; thankfully early signs suggest he is doing that.

The Championship campaign is a long and hard season, but if Luongo can maintain his current form over the course of the season, then there's no doubt doubt that he will be classed as one of the league's most influential players.
