Those who matter at QPR believe Joe Lumley has a future - and have handed the keeper a new deal that keeps him at the club until 2019 to prove it.

The 21-year-old sits behind Alex Smithies and Matt Ingram in the Rangers pecking order, but Hoops clearly see him as one for the future.

In contrast to players and agents banging down the door of club hierarchy to improve their pay packets, Lumley wasn’t even looking for a new deal as he told www.qpr.co.uk

"I wasn’t expecting it but (Goalkeeper Coach) Gavin Ward told me they were offering me a new contract because they have been impressed with me, which is amazing," he said.

“This gives me another chance to really push on.

Lumley joined QPR five years ago and made his first-team debut in January against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup, and straight after made his Championship bow against Blackburn Rovers.

Four of the best: L-R David Button and Marcus Bettinelli (Fulham), Ingram and Smithies

Smithies and Ingram have amassed more than 400 professional appearances between them, and Lumley said: “Every day I learn from training with them.

“They have both played so much already, and I can only benefit from training with them, and working with Gavin.

“I just want to keep going and keep working hard.

“Playing for the first team last season was an unbelievable feeling and it just motivated me even more,” Lumley added. “It just makes you want it more.”

“We know the manager is willing to give young players the opportunity, and we have seen that again this season. It’s up to us to work as hard as we can to get that chance.”

Sometime since, GWL posted the poll below. It looks out of date because Cole Kpekawa is set for a move, but do you believe any of the others that includes Lumley will be a first team regular?
